This part of the E4 trail initially connects the village of Gerakari with Fourfoura and then ascends to the shelter of Toumpotos Prinos in Psiloritis. The first part from Gerakari to Fourfoura can be done by car. Most of the hikers ignore this first section and start the ascent to the shelter immediately from Fourfouras (from there it takes 4:00 hours).
From Gerakari the E4 path that reaches from Kedros continues to Elenes and then descends through drylands to the village of Amari. From there we follow the main road, pass the villages of Opsigia, Petrochori, Vizari and finally reach Fourfouras. This is the easy part of the route, also accessible by car. Along the way we will see many great Byzantine churches.
From Fourfouras we follow the well-marked path to Psiloritis through a dirt road (up to 760 meters altitude) and then to a path that passes us through a stone mitata and finally to the mountain refuge Shelter Toumpotos Prinos (altitude 1600m). The route passes through a rugged and mountainous landscape with the vegetation consisting mainly of prinos and maples.
At the Toumpotos Prinos shelter we can spend the night and continue our ascent to the highest peak of Crete, the Holy Cross (2456m), via the E4.
